Welcome to the CEO Health and Safety Leadership Charter.
This initiative was launched in April 2005 by Duncan Hawthorn, CEO of Bruce Power Inc. to achieve a Canada-wide breakthrough in health and safety performance. Many Chief Executive Officers have already joined the Charter and the interest in this initiative from a broad range of sectors continues to grow. Members of this rapidly growing coalition have committed to work together to improve health and safety performance through sharing, mentoring and coaching. The coalition is expanding to include large and small organizations from all regions and sectors across Canada.
FOCUS ON: Hubbell Canada LP
Hubbell Canada LP has been a CEO Health & Safety Leadership Charter Signatory since 2007. Allan Gibbons is Hubbell's CEO.
Their safety performance has improved year over year with 25 lost time accidents in 2006, 13 in 2007 and year- to- date 2008 4. Medical aid has decreased from 12 in 2006 to 5 year- to- date. These figures are not acceptable, however they are trending in the right direction and they are working diligently at improving these results.
Background on Hubbell Canada
They are comprised of two facilities, one in Pickering and the other in Montreal. The Pickering facility is 150,000 square feet and its location includes a central distribution centre for the Canadian market. This facility conducts light manufacturing of service poles and power bars, as well as housing head office marketing, sales and customer service staff. The Montreal facility is 44,000 square feet and performs metal press manufacturing of wall and ceiling boxes and plates. Hubbell Canada LP employs 300 employees across Canada; approximately 130 employees are located in Pickering and 110 employees in Montreal.
What Hubbell is doing to improve
The Montreal facility has been working on implementing OHSAS and is now in the final phase, preparing for external audit and OHSAS certification. This system is aligned with their ISO 18001 quality program.
Milestones completed year-to-date under the program include:
- ensuring that all equipment is properly machine guarded;
- management meetings are held with the Joint Health & Safety Committee;
- all employees are fully engaged and understand policies designed to improve safety of each work cell during kaizen events;
- audits have been performed in two major injury cases, (hands and back); and
- all equipment has been analyzed and risk assessments assigned.
The facility is now utilizing equipment risk analysis data and completing remaining tasks. Absenteeism and safety policies are currently being strictly enforced. All medial aid and lost time incidents are investigated reported and result in action list being created with JHSC. The action list is reviewed at each meeting including insuring that corrective actions have been implemented immediately following any incident in the plant.
