Workforce Renewal

JANUARY 21, 2008 - London, ON    

Hydro One, a founding signatory of the CEO Health and Safety Leadership Charter, hosted a one-day workshop, the first of two, to discuss the themes of workforce renewal and building a strong health & safety culture. The event brought together over 40 leaders in various organizations to work together and to share ideas and strategies.

Tom Goldie, Senior Vice President, Corporate Services, Hydro One gave an overview of the workforce in Canada highlighting the shortage in labour supply and increase in labour demand. Click to view Tom's presentation

Adwoa Buahene, Managing Partner at n-gen People Performance Inc. gave an overview of the four generations in the workforce: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Gen Y’s and their different approaches to work. In particular generational considerations on safety were presented as well has how generational identities translate into behaviours.

A Gen-Y panel comprised of 5 young workers (Matt Cronin, Kris Bjorgan, Sinisa Grkovic, Yu San Ong and Tanner Whyte) fielded questions about their work experience at Hydro One. This diverse group of workers discussed what brought them to Hydro One as well as the challenges and opportunities they have faced.

Rob Ellis, President, Our Youth At Work the keynote luncheon speaker talked about the importance of keeping our young workers safe and recognizing the need for employers to become visible partners in schools and in homes.

The Experience to Date panel of Hydro One management focused on a variety of hiring and training practices designed to augment their existing resources in the areas of Engineering (Andy Mand, Director of Engineering), Provincial Lines (Len McMillan, Director of Provincial Lines), and Work Methods and Training (Wayne Ostermaier, Manger of Work Methods and Training).

Trefor Munn-Venn, Associate Director, National Security & Public Safety, The Conference Board of Canada facilitated small group discussions to focus the ideas and issues presented throughout the day.
